Kusch was in command of the U-154 from 02-43 to 01-44. Was then condemned to death by military tribunal and executed by a firing squard on 12 May, 1944. He was denounced by his I WO for defeatism. One real reason was that Kusch removed the mandatory picture of Hitler from the U-boat's officer's mess. Oblt. Gerth Gemeiner assumed command 01-44 and went down with the U-154 five months later.
